Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Feb 2023
The Security Management Department of the JICA Planning Division in Tokyo requested InterWorks to lead an in-person Security Risk Management (SRM) workshop this year. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, an online version of the JICA SRM was developed and implemented in 2021 and 2022. This SRM workshop, which took place from 30 January-1 February 2023, was based on the original (2020) agenda with minor modifications made based on experiences during both the in-person and online JICA SRM workshops.
The course focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, security planning, and critical incident management. The general security risk management process used by the UN Security Management System formed the basis for the presentations and materials. For future events, JICA may wish to consider a short introductory session focused on specific aspects of JICA security risk management policy and duty of care for JICA-related personnel.
The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and provided scenario-based, hands-on exercises through which each of the tools introduced could be explored, utilised and practiced. Participants completed the exercises using a fictional case study adapted for the JICA SRM to focus more on development-related issues and to include information related to a fictional JICA overseas office.
The experience of this exercise helps me to improve my skills by expanding my imagination on actual critical situations.
