InterWorks conducted a three-day workshop from 26-28 September, 2007 in Tokyo, Japan for JICA, other Government of Japan Officials, and NGO staff responsible for security in offices facing security threats. Participants were chosen for their responsibilities in relation to staff security as well as for the generally insecure nature of their office or programme locations. There were 24 participants, with approximately one third of these coming from non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The course focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, and security planning. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and facilitated the participants’ experience and practice in using each of the SRM tools provided through case study – based “hands-on” practical exercises. The three countries chosen for the case studies were: Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Sudan.
This training is very useful particularly for those who have previous experience in emergency operations, but not formally trained, or who have not yet had structural lessons learnt. Superb!
