InterWorks conducted a three-day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya from 25-27 November 2009. The workshop included participants responsible for (or working in support of) staff security for JICA. The workshop was closely modeled on the October SRM conducted in Tokyo, Japan under the umbrella of the UNHCR eCentre. Conducted for a JICA-only audience, the workshop was modified to be more relevant for JICA operations and an added component of individual action planning on the last day of the workshop.
The course focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, security planning, and critical incident management. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and facilitated the participants’ experience and practice in using each of the SRM tools provided through case study-based exercises. Because this was a regional JICA workshop in Africa, the three countries chosen for the prepared case studies were: Kenya, Madagascar and Sudan. Two participants also presented short field case studies from their countries.
The training itself was really useful and helpful for me and for our office because we have a lot of challenges in the field from the view point of security….Thanks a lot!
