United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Sep 2010
InterWorks conducted a three-day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya from 7-9 September 2010 for JICA staff members. The workshop was closely modeled on the standard UNHCR eCentre SRM workshop that is conducted annually in Tokyo but was tailored to the JICA-only audience for Nairobi. Like the standard eCentre SRM, the workshop included a critical incident management exercise that was re-worked to reflect a more realistic scenario for JICA offices in Africa. An individual action planning component was also included on the last day of the workshop with specific instructions for follow-up activities that participants were required to complete.
The course focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, security planning, and critical incident management. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and facilitated the participants’ experience and practice in using each of the SRM tools provided through case study-based exercises. Because this was a regional JICA workshop in Africa, the three countries chosen for the prepared case studies were: Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya and Uganda.
I am going to work with my staff members on ways to come up with an important and useful security system which we can apply in our offices using what I have learnt.
