InterWorks conducted a three-day workshop in Bangkok, Thailand from 16-18 July 2014 for 28 participants responsible for management of humanitarian and development program activities and/or staff security in their operations in the Asia-Pacific region. Participants represented a mix of organizations including JICA, UNHCR, NGOs, Red Cross/Red Crescent and government officials) from 15 different countries (mostly from the Asia-Pacific region, but also JICA staff working outside the region in DRC, Nigeria, and Sudan).
The course focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, security planning, and critical incident management. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and provided scenario-based, hands-on exercises in which each of the tools introduced could be explored and practiced. The core exercises were based on three different case countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia. In addition, participants presented short security-related case studies from countries where they work or have worked. These case studies allowed participants to share experiences and helped to illustrate key components of security risk management.
It has been a very useful workshop, I learnt many practical things I’ll implement. Exercises were very well organized and appropriate. Trainers were very good and definitely have the knowledge and capacity to share.
