United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Mar 2007
InterWorks conducted an international three-day workshop in Amman, Jordan for Ministry of Foreign Affairs Japan (MoFA) and JICA staff responsible for security in offices facing security threats. Participants were chosen for their responsibilities in relation to staff security as well as for the generally insecure nature of their office or programme locations. The workshop was held from 26-28 March 2007 at the Kempinski Hotel in Amman, with a high level of support from the local MoFA and JICA staff in Amman. The event was well-organized and implemented to the satisfaction of both the participants as well as the facilitation/course management team.
The course focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, and security planning. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and facilitated the participants’ experience and practice in using each of the SRM tools provided through case study – based “hands-on” practical exercises. Three countries were chosen for case studies: Jordan, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan. The workshop was tailored further to the specific needs of MoFA and JICA staff in insecure environments as were the exercises and discussion toward their particular field realities.
This training is useful not only security officers but also all experts and staff working in yellow and orange countries.”
