InterWorks delivered an Emergency Management Training (EMT) co-sponsored by UNHCR and the International Humanitarian City (IHC) with support from the UNHCR Global Learning Centre (GLC) from Jan 29-Feb 5, 2017.

The workshop included traditional training sessions delivered at the venue as well as an intensive three-day international emergency field deployment simulation exercise run at the IHC warehouse complex near the Maktoum International Airport. Participants were selected from Government, NGOs, and Red Crescent partners from the Gulf States. The emergency deployment simulation exercise was designed to include humanitarian field skills and the necessary elements to protect vulnerable women, children and men in a natural disaster scenario. The overall training event included guidance and skills practice sessions on:

  • humanitarian coordination and leadership structures
  • protection and needs of vulnerable groups
  • emergency operations planning
  • supplies and logistics in emergencies
  • standards and procedures setting
  • working with operational partners and coordination in emergencies
  • negotiation
  • personal preparation for pre-deployment
  • psychological first aid
  • managing stress in one’s self and others
  • emergency preparedness and contingency planning
  • security, risk assessment and reporting security incidents
  • hostage incident management
  • registration and information management
  • media relations and interview skills
  • telecommunications and GPS
