InterWorks conducted a three-day workshop in Tokyo, Japan for government and NGO partners who manage aid projects in dangerous environments. The event took place in Tokyo from 25 – 27 June, and included managers from JICA field offices, the Japanese International Peace Cooperation Headquarters, Japan Self-Defense Forces, Japan Red Cross, and an array of Japanese NGOs. Participants represented operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
The course focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, security planning, and critical incident management. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and provided scenario-based hands-on exercises in which each of the tools introduced could be explored and practiced. The core exercises were based on three different case countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and South Sudan. JICA also presented case studies related to its recent experiences in Dadaab and Mali.
