United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Sep 2023
InterWorks conducted a virtual Security Risk Management (SRM) workshop with the UNHCR Regional Centre for Emergency Preparedness (eCentre) in support of the Japan NGO Initiative for Safety and Security (JaNISS) from 11-15 September 2023.
The virtual SRM focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, security planning, and critical incident management. The general security risk management process used by the UN Security Management System formed the basis for the presentations and materials. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and provided scenario-based, hands-on exercises through which each of the tools introduced could be explored, utilized and practiced. Participants completed the exercises using the Suremia case study so that everyone had the same information to analyze.
This virtual SRM workshop included an online critical incident management (CIM) exercise on the final day so participants could practice what they learned during the workshop. The centrality of protection and the emphasis on programme criticality to meet the needs of affected populations were also key points of this workshop.
I actually enjoyed and gained more knowledge and confidence through this training than I expected before attending. Thank you very much for all of those who were involved in organizing this SRM workshop!
