United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Nov 2017
InterWorks and the UNHCR Global Learning Centre (GLC) and Field Security Service (FSS) held two Security Management Learning Programme (SMLP) workshop events in Budapest, Hungary from 30 October – 3 November and 6-10 November 2017. The SMLP has been an on-going programme of UNHCR since 2006. For these events, the workshops were entirely revised to reflect a) the UNSMS Security Risk Management (SRM) Policy adopted in late 2015 and b) an increased focus on the management of security. The latter is a recognition of the professionalization of UNHCR security services and the increased number of Field Safety Advisors (FSAs) with technical expertise who are deployed in UNHCR offices and supported by FSS in Geneva.
The workshop included sessions on the different steps in the SRM process, programme criticality, security planning and security budgeting to help participants gain an understanding of the underlying concepts with the aim of making more informed security risk management decisions. This SMLP was also designed to incorporate more participant experiences and to focus on “real life” UNHCR situations rather than a fictional case study country by using actual approved SRM reports from the participants’ operations.
One of the best training[s] I had. Very interactive. A lot of material covered in 4 days .. know how to stay and deliver while staying safe and confident of the decision I can make.
