Security Management Exercise (SMX) & Security Awareness Training

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) | Dec 2011

InterWorks facilitated a Security Management Exercise (SMX) from 28 November – 1 December 2011 in Kigoma, Tanzania for UNHCR staff from Kigoma, Kasulu, Mwanza, Ulyankulu and Mpanda offices. In addition to the SMX in Kigoma the team conducted one day of Security Awareness Training for available staff.

The workshop in Kigoma, Tanzania consisted of a three-day SMX (modeled on the SMLP). The SMX also included an extra session related to the UN Security Level System in order to meet participants’ requests for more information related to how SLS works.

The purpose of the SMX is for a UNHCR country team to walk through the UN Security Risk Assessment process step-by-step based on UNHCR’s operations in the specific country and its operating environment. Staff are trained on how to conduct the process and are able to identify specific follow-up activities that are needed in order to enhance the security risk management of their operations.

I am able to understand threat assessment, threat assessment techniques, methods of analyzing information.
