InterWorks conducted a three-day workshop in Tokyo, Japan for JICA, other Government of Japan Officials, and NGO staff responsible for security in offices facing security threats. Participants were generally chosen for their responsibilities in relation to staff security as well as for the generally insecure nature of their office or programme locations. Participants mainly came from JICA, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The course focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, security planning, and critical incident management. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and facilitated the participants’ experience and practice in using each of the SRM tools provided through case study – based “hands-on” practical exercises. The three countries chosen for the case studies were: Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Sudan.
