InterWorks conducted a three-day workshop from 28-30 June 2011 in Tokyo, Japan for 25 participants responsible for (or working in support of) staff security for their various organizations – JICA staff members, other Japanese government offices, various NGOs and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). The workshop focused on the overall security risk management (SRM) approach as well as specific tools and techniques, from initial threat assessment to mitigation of risk, security planning, and critical incident management. The course trainers provided short presentations of key components of the overall SRM approach and provided scenario-based, hands-on exercises in which each of the tools introduced could be explored and practiced. The core exercises were based on three different case countries: Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, and Sudan. Two short and informal case studies were presented by participants – one related to a security incident in Haiti and one related to AusAid’s security management procedures in Papua New Guinea.
The objective of the training course is to train me and participants in the most useful for security risk management and security countermeasures, mainly using real case studies and group discussions. We were not only learning from the instructors, but also from other participants through sharing of their experiences and inputs.
