Communicating Security Strategies: Training, Advising and Mentoring

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) | Apr 2011

InterWorks facilitated an intensive five-day training event in Budapest with the specific aim of helping UNHCR Field Safety Advisors to better train, coach, mentor and influence the staff members with whom they work in order to improve security of UNHCR’s field offices throughout the world.

The workshop presented modern adult education techniques in training and facilitation and provided workshop participants several opportunities to develop and practice these skills during the course. The training included the use of short PowerPoint presentations, individual and group exercises and interactive participation, moving away from the conventional classroom lecture methodology. In addition to understanding the basics of adult learning styles and approaches, participants learned to use their own strengths to best advantage as a trainer or mentor to effectively change behaviors relating to safety and security of UNHCR staff.
