InterWorks designed and facilitated a national advocacy seminar “Education Indicators for Disaster Risk Reduction, Conflict Mitigation and Emergency Response: Workshop for Kenyan Ministry of Education officials” took place in Nairobi, Kenya from 3-5 March 2010.
This workshop was designed as a follow-up to the regional workshop conducted in Tanzania in October 2009. During that workshop country teams were given the opportunity to identify a follow-up activity that they thought would contribute to further capacity development in their own country. As a result this workshop was designed with the following objectives:
- Increase awareness of disaster risk reduction in the education system
- Identify actions that could be taken throughout the system to reduce risk due to disasters and conflict
The workshop drew on a range of training methodologies and facilitation techniques, including short presentations, group work, and facilitated discussions. Participants were encouraged to participate actively and to build on their knowledge of the Kenyan education system. Many of the exercises included reference to the Kenyan National Education Plan, 2005-2010 in order to make the activities more relevant to the Kenyan experience.
The facilitators did a commendable job. Their warm, friendliness and wealth of experience on DRR and preparedness is commendable. Learning was interesting because it was participatory.
