Basics of International Humanitarian Response (BIHR)

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) | Jul 2011

A UNHCR eCentre “Basics of International Humanitarian Response” (BIHR) workshop was held in Hua Hin, Thailand from 24 July-1 August 2011. As in previous workshops, the course focused on 3 main elements of international humanitarian response: (1) Technical knowledge of the humanitarian ‘sectors’, (2) practical field skills, such as radio usage, GPS and map reading, first aid, etc., and (3) coordination and interpersonal skills (including negotiation and communication skills) of the multiple international and local responders into an effective humanitarian response. This version of the course was closely based on an earlier 2011 BIHR event but was lengthened by 1 day in response to evaluations from that workshop. This workshop included new sessions on registration, and distribution, and additional time for some of the other sessions.

It was indeed an invaluable training for me. It has better equipped me to be an effective and efficient humanitarian worker and respond to the needs of suffering communities by disaster.
