Basics of International Humanitarian Response (BIHR)

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) | Oct 2008

InterWorks conducted a Basics of International Humanitarian Response workshop from 29 September – 6 October, 2008 in Thailand. The course focused on 3 main elements of international humanitarian response: (1) Technical knowledge of the humanitarian ‘sectors’, (2) practical field skills, such as radio usage, GPS and map reading, first aid, etc., and (3) coordination (including negotiation and communication skills) of the multiple international and local responders into an effective humanitarian response. The course was held at Pranburi, Thailand, in order to take advantage resources offered by the nearby Camp Thanarat, (Royal Thai Army Infantry Training Center) which has been used extensively in the eCentre’s various security-related courses for field security simulations.

The course was modified from that of previous years to further incorporate more “hands-on” learning techniques and to reduce the number of classroom and PowerPoint presentation-based sessions.

It was great and fabulous workshop. I really had a chance to test myself how I’ll possibly react when I meet real emergency situation in terms of unexpected or extreme situation with cool judgment. Thank you all!
